Kolhapur student returning after appearing for CET dies after coming under truck’s wheels, his father suffers serious injuries
Kolhapur: An 18-year-old Std XII student from Kolhapur died after being crushed under an 18-wheeler truck on the Nagpur-Ratnagiri National Highway near Kalambi village on Thursday night, while returning home on a two-wheeler with his father after appearing for CET in Solapur.
The Miraj police identified the deceased as Hariprasad Santaji Chavan, a resident of Khari Corner in Varuntirth Ves, Kolhapur. “His father, Santaji Shilwant Chavan (48), a constable posted at the Laxmipuri police station, suffered serious injuries in the accident and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kolhapur,” an officer said.
Both of them had travelled to Solapur on a two-wheeler for the examination. “After the test, they went to Akkalkot for a visit to the Swami Samarth temple before beginning their return journey to Kolhapur. Santaji was riding the bike with his son seated behind him,” the officer said.
The accident occurred around 10.30pm near Kalambi village. “While attempting to give way to a car approaching from behind, their bike collided with a container truck that was reversing to turn towards a roadside hotel. Hariprasad, who was not wearing a helmet, fell and was crushed under the truck’s wheels, leading to his death on the spot. Santaji was wearing a helmet,” the officer said.
Both were rushed to the Govt Medical Hospital in Miraj, where Hariprasad was declared brought dead. Santaji was later shifted to Kolhapur after receiving primary treatment.
Police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.
Santaji’s colleagues said the father-son duo shared a close bond and visited the Jyotiba temple in Wadi-Ratnagiri every Sunday.
