Communicable diseases reported in Palakkad after summer rains

Palakkad: Following summer rains, communicable diseases are spreading in different parts of Palakkad with health authorities reporting a rise in cases of dengue fever, chickenpox, jaundice and diarrhoea.Health department data show that more than 500 people are visiting hospitals daily with fever-related symptoms. Officials said the change in weather conditions after intense summer heat and subsequent rainfall may have weakened immunity levels among people, leading to the spread of viral infections. One person in Akathethara has been confirmed with dengue fever, while 12 others with dengue-like symptoms are under observation in the area. Six cases of jaundice have also been reported to special epidemic cell functioning at the district hospital. Meanwhile, 131 people have sought treatment for diarrhoea and 16 persons affected by chickenpox have been admitted to hospitals across the district. Health officials warned that the possibility of water-borne and mosquito-borne diseases is high during rainy season. Public has been advised to drink only properly boiled water and prevent stagnant water from collecting in and around houses.
