Kolkata is giving a fresh purpose to unused urban spaces with a new community-driven fitness initiative under the Baguiati flyover near Joramandir. What was once a dead pocket beneath the flyover has now been transformed into a free sports and recreation zone through an initiative backed by singer-MLA Aditi Munshi. The facility includes turf space for football and cricket, along with skating and exercise zones aimed at encouraging fitness among residents of the densely populated Rajarhat-Gopalpur area. A dedicated pet-walking zone has also been created, while conservancy staff have been deployed to keep the area clean and litter-free.According to the shift-in-charge, the facility remains free for all users, with only prior booking required. Open daily, the space is emerging as a new community hub where young people and families can gather for sports, exercise and recreation. As Kolkata continues to face growing population pressure and civic challenges, such projects are being seen as innovative ways to improve urban life while promoting health, fitness and community engagement.
