Kanpur: Residents of Kanpur division sweltered on Tuesday as mercury reached 44 degree Celsius, as recorded by CSA observatory, forcing the people to stay indoors amid extreme hot conditions.At around 2pm, the heat index was at its peak and gave an impact of nearly 46 to 47 degree Celsius, creating extremely risky conditions and forcing citizens to avoid strenuous outdoor activities.Roads and market areas witnessed thin movement during afternoon hours as people preferred to remain indoors. Similarly, the maximum UV index was recorded between 10 and 12, which falls in the “extreme” category.The maximum relative humidity was recorded at 41%, indicating dry weather conditions in the city. North-westerly winds blew at a speed ranging between 4.5 kmph and 13.9 kmph, further intensifying the heatwave-like conditions.According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the residents of Kanpur Division may not get any respite from this extreme weather till June 5, 2026.Dr S Sunil Pandey, weather expert of CSA university, also said that the residents of Kanpur division might face similar situation till June 5 as there were no signs for any relief.
The agency had already issued a yellow alert for several districts cautioning the people against extreme temperatures in the coming days, and had also issued a preventive advisory for the people.“A gradual rise in daytime temperatures is likely to persist throughout the week and heatwave conditions may intensify further in the coming days,” the weather forecasting body said.In its weather forecast for Wednesday, the IMD said that dry weather accompanied by bright sunshine is expected to continue in the city.
