400-tonne steel girder to be launched on flyover at Luv Kush Square
Indore: The construction of double-decker flyover at Luv Kush Square is entering its most critical phase with the first of two massive steel girders—weighing 400 tonnes and spanning 65 metres—to be ‘pushed' into the place across the main intersection on Sunday night. The girders will be installed 23 metres above the ground. To ensure safety during this complex operation, traffic beneath the span will be completely halted. Once the girder is positioned, levelling and finishing work will follow.Unlike standard concrete segments that are lifted by cranes, these massive steel girders were assembled directly on top of the flyover structure. Engineers have opted to push the girder across the span using iron rails, with crane support from below to maintain balance. This specific 65-metre length was chosen to avoid placing pillars in the middle of the busy intersection, ensuring smoother traffic flow once the project is complete. The first girder launch on Sunday night would be on the arm leading from Sanwer Road to Ujjain, while the second girder is currently being assembled and is scheduled for launch in one month. After steel girder placement, a double layer of asphalt will be applied over the balanced segments to complete the six-lane expressway."The use of these massive steel girders is essential because we wanted a pillar-free main square. It's a precision task that requires night-time operations to minimise public risk," IDA CEO Parikshit Jhade said.
