Uttarakhand ex-MP visits Anjel’s Tripura home; vows help, justice
Agartala: Former Rajya Sabha member from Uttarakhand and BJP national spokesperson Tarun Vijay on Friday visited the grieving family of Anjel Chakma in Machmara, Unakoti district of Tripura.Anjel, an MBA student, was brutally attacked by a group of miscreants in Selakui, Dehradun, on Dec 9. He succumbed to his injuries on Dec 26 after battling for his life in hospital for a fortnight. His younger brother Michael was with him at the time of the attack.Vijay visited the family to offer condolences and extend his support during this difficult time. The incident has drawn significant national attention, sparking debates over justice and equality.

Speaking to the media, Vijay said his visit was driven by solidarity with the bereaved family. He emphasised that the tragedy was not confined to Tripura but resonated deeply with the people of Uttarakhand as well.“It has become imperative to provide a job to Anjel Chakma’s younger brother Michael in the Tripura govt, and sincere efforts in this regard will be taken on my part,” Vijay said.The BJP leader also proposed setting up a special northeast cell within the Uttarakhand Police to address cases of racial abuse and discrimination.

Vijay reiterated the Uttarakhand govt’s commitment to a fair and thorough investigation, assuring that those responsible would face exemplary punishment.Anjel’s killing has sent shockwaves across Tripura, igniting grief and outrage. Organisations, activists, and citizens have united to demand a swift trial and stringent action against the accused.The attack is believed to have stemmed from racist remarks directed at Anjel and his brother, who were derisively called “Chinese” by the alleged offenders, reportedly under the influence of alcohol. The incident has spurred protests and intensified demands for justice across the northeast, fuelling conversations about combating racial prejudice.Vijay told the media that four of the five accused have been arrested, while the prime suspect is believed to have fled to Nepal. In response, Uttarakhand Police has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to expedite the probe and ensure the fugitive is captured without delay.Vijay also met Tripura governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu to provide an update on the investigation and seek further assurance regarding its progress.Meanwhile, the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council has extended financial aid of Rs 3 lakh to the bereaved family.In a gesture of compassion, chief executive member Purna Chandra Jamatia personally visited the family to deliver the cheque and assured them of additional assistance as needed.
