Auston Matthews further solidified his status among the league’s top players in the NHL with an incredible display last Thursday night, scoring his 14th career hat trick and an assist to help lead his Toronto Maple Leafs to an incredible comeback victory against the Winnipeg Jets, 6-5. Matthews had an incredible display in crunch time.
The Maple Leafs overcame an early deficit to secure their fifth win in six games, showcasing depth and resilience despite injuries to key players like William Nylander, Dakota Joshua, and Chris Tanev. Toronto’s offensive surge was led by Matthews, whose contributions underscored his ongoing chase for franchise and league records.
Auston Matthews’ 14th career hat trick seals Maple Leafs win over Winnipeg Jets
The defining moment came with 4:22 remaining when a loose puck slipped past Jets goalie Eric Comrie, landing perfectly for Matthews in front of the net. With the goal, Matthews completed his hat trick, snapping a 5-all tie and surpassing Pat LaFontaine for the most career hat tricks by a U.S.-born NHL player. The goal also brought him within one of Mats Sundin’s record of 420 goals, further solidifying his legacy in Toronto.
Earlier in the game, Matthews scored on a power play with just two seconds left in the second period, cutting Toronto’s deficit to 4-3. His second goal of the night was historic in itself, as it set a new Maple Leafs franchise record for most home goals at 232, surpassing Darryl Sittler’s mark that had stood for over four decades.
Winnipeg struggled to maintain momentum despite a strong start. Mark Scheifele scored twice and assisted on another goal to put the Jets ahead 5-4 during the power play, but Troy Stecher’s slap shot leveled the score, setting the stage for Matthews’ decisive third goal. The Jets extended their losing streak to eight games and have posted a disappointing 3-13-4 record in their last 20 contests.
Toronto’s win was also remarkable for their substitute goalkeeper, Dennis Hildeby, who was summoned due to an injury to Joseph Woll in the second period and saved 22 out of 24 shots to register the win for his team. The Maple Leafs’s strength in managing to win with most members of their crew absent speaks volumes for their unity and power as a force to be reckoned with as the season continues.
With Matthews continuing to break records, it looks as if the Maple Leafs will continue to play dominantly, and the Jets will only face increasing pressure to turn their trend of play around.
