In a daring anti-drug crackdown in the Diglang Punji area of Cachar district, an Assam Police officer, Sarif Hussain Kazi, was gravely wounded when suspected smugglers opened fire. In the ensuing gunbattle, Kazi sustained serious bullet injuries and was rushed first to a local hospital before being airlifted to Guwahati for specialized care.
In a significant operation, Sivasagar police captured a self-proclaimed sergeant major of the Ulfa-I militant group, known as Biren Chetia, also called Rontu Asom, in the Dhyanpathar village. During the arrest, officers seized a Beretta handgun, rounds of ammunition, and hand grenades. Reports indicate that he had crossed over from Nagaland after a stint in Myanmar, planning to instigate unrest.
