NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of five accused-Deepak Khanna, Amit Khanna, Krishan, Mithun and Manoj Mittal- till April 1 in the Kanjhawala hit-and-run case.
Delhi Police is likely to file a chargesheet in the case on April 1. According to the prosecution, the five were the occupants of the car that hit the 20-year-old girl, Anjali Singh, and dragged her over 12km for more than two hours. The incident resulted in her death on the intervening night of December 31, 2022 and January 1, 2023.
Police had earlier invoked Section 302 (murder) of Indian Penal Code in the case. Deepak Khanna (26), Amit Khanna (25), Krishan (27), Mithun (26) and Manoj Mittal were arrested on January 2. Another accused Ankush Khanna had surrendered on January 6 and was released on bail the next day. Ankush Bhardwaj was granted bail on January 17 by a sessions court, which stated that "at this stage, there seems to be no document in the form of CDR/CCTV footage, etc., produced by the investigating agency to show any prior meeting of minds of accused/applicant Ashutosh with the other co-accused persons to commit the act before he received the alleged call from co-accused Ankush at 4.56 am."
On January 20, a court dismissed the bail application of Deepak Khanna.
Later, the police stated that Bhardwaj tried to mislead the investigation and that it was Amit Khanna, who was behind the wheels at the time of the incident.
