COIMBATORE: In a dramatic shift from the 2021 Assembly election -- where the
AIADMK swept all 10 constituencies in the district -- the current counting trends show a multi-cornered fight with the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) of actor Vijay emerging as a significant disruptor.
AIADMK continues to show strength in Thondamuthur, where party heavyweight S P Velumani maintains a commanding lead with a healthy margin of over 15,000 votes. The party also holds slim leads in the Pollachi and Kavundampalayam constituencies, though the contests there remain neck-and-neck.
While
DMK is currently leading in Mettupalayam, all eyes are on the high-stakes battle in Coimbatore South. DMK’s V Senthil Balaji is currently ahead, but his position is precarious. He holds a narrow lead of less than 1,000 votes over TVK candidate Senthilkumar, making it one of the most watched contests in the state.
TVK’s Kinathukadavu TVK candidate Vignesh K secured a massive lead following the conclusion of Round 13. TVK candidates are also currently leading in four other key constituencies: Valparai, Sulur, Coimbatore North and Singanallur.
As counting progresses, the traditional dominance of the Dravidian majors in Coimbatore is being sternly tested by the TVK’s unexpected momentum across both urban and rural pockets.
