Enineering student dies during bike race near Kovur in Chennai
Chennai: An 18-year-old engineering student died in a road accident during a motorcycle race on the Tambaram-Maduravoyal Bypass Road near Kovur on Friday night. Police said the student suffered head injuries after losing control of the motorcycle.The deceased, Jai Harish, of Kadapperi in Tambaram, was a second year electronics and communication engineering student at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology at Sholinganallur. He and a group of six others went on motorcycle ride on Friday evening. Since his own bike was under repair, he rode a friend's high-powered motorcycle. Police said he took a helmet from home, but gave it to one of his friends instead of wearing it himself.As the group neared Kovur near Porur, Jai Harish lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. He suffered severe head injuries, while another youth suffered minor injuries in the accident.Friends and passers-by rushed the injured men to Tambaram Government Hospital, but he died on the way. Police registered a case and are identifying all the riders who participated in the bike race by examining CCTV footage from the stretch.
