Chennai: Two weeks after an elderly woman was found murdered for her gold jewellery, police have arrested a man in connection with the incident. Police seized two sovereigns of gold from the accused identified as Ramarajan, 45, of Tambaram.
On Dec 18, Alangaram, 80, a resident of Nathanallur village, was found murdered inside her house. She was living alone in the house. The elderly woman is survived by one son and four daughters.
Police said her son and a daughters had visited her the previous night and served her dinner before leaving.
As Alangaram did not step out of her house for a long time the next morning, neighbours grew suspicious and went to check on her. She was found lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries.
Upon information, Walajabad police rushed to the scene and sent the body to Chengalpet govt Hospital for autopsy.
After an intensive search, police arrested Ramarajan of Bharathiyar Street, Nathanallur colony, in Tambaram. During interrogation, Ramarajan allegedly confessed that he attacked the woman to steal her gold jewellery and money.
He told police that he knew that she was living alone and that he attacked her when she tried to raise an alarm. Police said he was also involved in an attempt to murder case last year.
He was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody. Further probe is on.
