Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh state department of prisons and correctional services has launched a reform initiative titled "Akshar Se Atmabodh" (remission by reading), aimed at encouraging positive behavioural change among prisoners through reading. The programme was first introduced at Model Central Jail, Kanda, on April 28 by director general of prisons and correctional services Abhishek Trivedi, and then at district jail, Solan, on May 21. It will now be expanded to jails across the state.
Under the initiative, inmates will be provided inspirational, educational and morally enriching books, including motivational literature, biographies, spiritual texts and personality development material. After reading, the prisoners must submit a brief summary explaining what they learned from the book. Based on their participation and understanding, eligible inmates may receive remission in their sentence as per rules. The department said the initiative aimed to help prisoners become responsible and self-reliant citizens.
