Groom held for ‘calling off’ wedding over dowry demand
Hisar: Police in Fatehabad district have arrested a man for allegedly refusing to marry a woman after her family failed to meet dowry demands, including a car and a motorcycle, officials said on Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Sunil, a resident of Adampur in Hisar district. Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the involvement of other family members in the case. According to Fatehabad police spokesperson ASI Vinod Kumar, a case was registered on the basis of the woman's complaint under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act. In her complaint, the woman stated that her marriage with the accused was fixed for Dec 1, 2025, while the engagement ceremony was held on Oct 24, 2025. She alleged that during the ceremony, gold and silver ornaments, along with other gifts, were presented in the presence of both families. However, after the engagement, the groom's family allegedly started demanding a motorcycle and a car as dowry. The complainant further alleged that the accused side refused to solemnise the marriage when the demands were not fulfilled.
