Abohar: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in the Abohar town of Fazilka district was suspended and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after a video showing him allegedly conducting a drug transaction from inside a Dial 112 police emergency response vehicle went viral on social media.
In the 12-second video, a Punjab Police Dial 112 vehicle is seen parked on the road. During this time, two youths arrive on a motorcycle and stop right next to the vehicle. The footage captures ASI Balwinder Singh, sitting in the vehicle, buying suspected contraband from the motorcycle-borne youths. It is alleged that the officer purchased chitta for Rs 500.
The alleged drug transaction was video recorded by a bystander.
Ashwant Singh, superintendent of police, Abohar, said, "The video is about 4-5 days old. An investigation revealed that within the jurisdiction, ASI Balwinder called a known associate, Jashan, to summon him. He then purchased a narcotic substance from the young man. Following the investigation, the ASI has been placed under suspension."
Abohar MLA Sandeep Jakhar questioned, "How can those who are themselves facilitating the spread of this trade be expected to curb drug abuse?"
