Bengaluru: From crisp white kurtas and silk dhotis to impeccably tailored bandhgalas and designer scarves, Karnataka Congress chief and Chief Minister-designate DK Shivakumar has fashioned one of the most recognisable personal brands in Indian politics. Unlike many politicians who consciously cultivate an image of austerity through simple kurta-pyjamas or traditional attire, Shivakumar has never hesitated to flaunt supreme and ultra luxury labels such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, Burberry and Gucci. His favourites are scarfs and stoles. In fact, he once wrapped a LV scarf around his neck while visiting a garbage segregation plant on Hosur Road in Bengaluru.Blending traditional Karnataka attire with premium global labels, Shivakumar is often seen sporting colourful designer scarves, luxury sunglasses and high-end watches. His clothing choices are rarely incidental. Associates say he carefully selects outfits, assisted by family members and close circle friends, based on the nature of his engagements, whether it is a political rally, cultural function, official meeting or overseas visit.
While white continues to dominate his wardrobe—symbolising simplicity, discipline and his decades-long association with the Congress party—Shivakumar frequently experiments with pastel shades, earthy tones and custom-tailored jackets that lend a contemporary touch to his public appearances. He is most commonly seen in elegant kurtas paired with vibrant scarves during political and cultural events, while Nehru jackets and bandhgalas make occasional appearances at formal functions. During international visits and business engagements, he has often opted for sharp blazers and bespoke suits, reflecting a more corporate and global image. Luxury brands also feature prominently in his collection. His accessories include premium timepieces from brands like Rolex and Cartier, further reinforcing his image as one of Karnataka’s most fashion-conscious politicians.

Do you think luxury fashion has a place in politics?
His penchant for luxury fashion has not escaped political scrutiny. Several supporters of his have posted videos on social meda platforms of them gifting scarfs and stoles from high-brand brands. One of his designer scarves became the centre of a political controversy after opposition leaders criticised him for allegedly wearing a scarf, the starting price of which was nearly Rs 59,000. The BJP coined the moniker “Costly Kumar”, while JD(S) youth leader Nikhil Kumaraswamy accused him of displaying extravagance at a time when people were grappling with rising prices. Shivakumar, however, has consistently defended his choice of attire, arguing that personal success should not be viewed as a political liability.Another distinctive feature of his wardrobe is the customised “dk” monogram embroidered on select shirts and kurtas. The subtle signature, stitched near the cuff or chest, has become a recognisable element of his style, adding a touch of exclusivity to otherwise understated outfits.Political observers attribute Shivakumar’s appreciation for refined dressing partly to the influence of former chief minister SM Krishna, long regarded as one of Karnataka’s most stylish political figures. Exposure to corporate circles, business leaders and national politics further shaped his transformation from a grassroots organiser into a leader who consciously invests in presentation and personal branding.
