Indigenous arms power India’s defence push: Seth

Prayagraj: India’s growing military strength is being forged within its own defence industry, minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth said on Monday, underlining that indigenous weapons and systems have become central to the country’s operational success. Addressing the North Tech Symposium 2026 in Prayagraj on Tuesday, he pointed to the success of Operation Sindoor as an example of how domestically developed advanced weaponry, combined with the courage of the armed forces, helped neutralise terrorist threats and thwart hostile designs.Seth emphasised that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) form the backbone of India’s economy, while startups are emerging as the country’s “brand ambassadors.” He described both as key drivers in achieving the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047, a goal set by PM Narendra Modi.“Our startups and MSMEs are the Vishwakarmas of this era,” he said.He said the increasing use of Made-in-India systems demonstrates the country’s firm commitment to achieving self-reliance in defence.Highlighting broader trends, Seth said record defence production and export figures are evidence of a “New India” that is determined to strengthen its capabilities to safeguard national interests. At the same time, he stressed that India remains committed to peace, but will not ignore any threat to its sovereignty.He cautioned that rapidly evolving technologies could render today’s systems obsolete, urging industry stakeholders to think beyond conventional approaches and remain at the forefront of innovation amid global uncertainties.Seth reiterated govt’s continued support for strengthening the defence ecosystem through policy initiatives and funding, while also acknowledging the transformative impact of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor.
