Ahmedabad city, district among top accident hotspots in 2025
Ahmedabad: A recent report tabled in the state govt by the senior officials of the transport department indicated that Ahmedabad city recorded deaths of 403 persons in road accidents, whereas the rest of the district recorded 400 deaths, totalling 803 deaths in 2025. The number was about 10% of the state’s total road fatalities which was 7,889. While Ahmedabad rural (district) recorded rise of 20.5% in fatalities in three years (from 332 in 2022 to 400 in 2025), the city recorded dip of 17.4% (488 in 2022 to 403 in 2025).
Analysis of the report indicated that two cities (Ahmedabad and Surat) and 15 districts accounted for 60% of the total fatalities recorded (5,036) in the state in 2025. The coordination meet stressed on identifying top hotspots and address them through 4Es of road safety – Education, Engineering, Enforcement, and Emergency care.
A senior road safety expert from the city said that the analysis of recently-published Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India (ADSI) 2024 report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has identified pedestrians, two-wheeler riders and cyclists as the most vulnerable groups that accounted for 92% of the total fatalities in the city.
“Majority of these are termed vulnerable road users and thus the need of the hour is to ensure adequate road infrastructure. The state govt report also mentions ‘need for continuous, unobstructed footpaths, safe crossings, and traffic calming measures’. Mapping of the accident hotspots is an ongoing process, and some initiatives have also been taken by the city police to control the traffic flow,” said the expert. “It is a multi-stakeholder issue, and thus all 4Es must be implemented.”
