Union minister M Venkaiah Naidu, who has been camping in Tamil Nadu since Monday morning, has apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the latest health condition of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Naidu also met top leadership of AIADMK, including party legislators, during the day, sources said.

A near total shutdown like situation prevailed in the city with shops and other establishments downing shutters and office goers returning home early as Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's health condition continued to remain critical today.


The entire area in and around Apollo Hospitals, where she is being treated since September 22, resembled a fortress with traffic completely halted on the road leading to the hospital and a heavy police posse deployed.

With autos and cab numbers slowly dwindling as Tamil Nadu chief minister remained in very critical condition in Apollo Hospitals, a team of volunteers in Chennai have come forward to help those stuck without access to commute.


After unconfirmed reports on Jayalalithaa's health surfaced on Monday evening sparking fears of crowd unrest, two volunteers - Basith and Balaji Premkumar -- put up a post on Facebook asking people facing any emergencies or with urgent need of commute to get in touch with them.

Special prayers were offered at Ujjain's famous Lord Mahakal temple on Monday for speedy recovery of Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.


As the news about Jayalalithaa suffering cardiac arrest spread, the priests at the temple also started chanting Mahamrityunjaya Mantra - a part of Rigveda, which is considered as death-conquering chant.

In the wake of tense situation in Tamil Nadu over CM Jayalalitha's critical health, Karnataka State Road Transport has stopped all 470 bus services between the two states from Monday morning. Officials in the corporation said they will wait and watch the law and order situation on the border and for a green signal from the police to send their buses to Tamil Nadu.


The services from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka has also been put on hold.

Tension gripped Chennai after Apollo Hospitals announced on Monday that Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa was 'very critical' after suffering a cardiac arrest on Sunday.


Students and IT employees started returning home in large numbers. Around 2pm, IT employees at Tidel Park were told to leave if they wished to. Schools like Sishya in Adyar and Sri Sarada Secondary School, Gopalapuram, located close to DMK chief Karunanidhi's residence, called off their classes around 11am.
