Surgical strikes across LoC

Amid demands for releasing proof of the surgical strikes by the Army across the LoC, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said everyone should have faith in the government and allow the force to take its own call.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called on President Pranab Mukherjee and briefed him on the recent developments in the aftermath of the 'surgical strikes' carried out by the army across the LoC.

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday compared Pakistan's condition to an "anesthetized patient" after a surgery and said like Hanuman Indian Army has recognized its prowess.

Pakistan received yet another public smack-down from the United States for its loose talk about using nuclear weapons against India.

Pakistan has told UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that India's claim of carrying out a surgical strike across the LoC was false and insisted that the responsibility for the "escalating crisis rests entirely on India". In her meeting with the UN chief, Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN Maleeha Lodhi told Ban that Pakistan has exercised maximum restraint but would respond forcefully to any acts of aggression and provocation.

With Pakistan announcing that the Saarc Summit scheduled to be held in November will be postponed, Maldives has sought a "conducive environment" for the eight-nation bloc's gathering. "The Government of Maldives has urged the member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) to create an environment conducive for holding the 19th Saarc Summit," the Maldives Foreign Ministry said in a statement late Friday

UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon has offered to act as a mediator between India and Pakistan to help the nuclear-armed neighbours resolve their disputes, as he urged both nations to take immediate steps to de-escalate tensions in the region. He also called on the governments of Pakistan and India to address their outstanding issues, including Kashmir, "peacefully through diplomacy and dialogue."

A member of special operations team that carried out surgical strikes+ across Line of Control (LoC) received minor injury during exfiltration but it was not due to any enemy or terrorist action, Army sources said on Friday, trashing reports in Pakistan about Indian casualties during the operation.

They said some Pakistani TV channels are playing "morphed" video clips showing Indian Army casualties as part of "black propaganda".

Retaliating to India's cross-LoC strike could be a knotty dilemma for Pakistan. An Uri-type attack carries the risk of serious escalation while a jihadi strike on civilians will draw attention to Pakistan's terror links even as Kashmir seems to have fallen off the map. Though the possibility of a counterstrike looms large on the Indian security radar, Pakistan might find itself wrestling with unattractive choices resulting from a misplaced assessment of India's response to a terror attack.

Pakistan is being blamed for the escalation of tensions in the Indian subcontinent. Its coddling of UN-designated terror groups and initiation of cross-border attacks on India are being seen by the Obama administration as the provocation &mdash; if not the justification &mdash; for New Delhi&#39;s decision to conduct a onetime, demonstrative, surgical strike across the LoC.

Anticipating a strike by Pakistan-based terror outfits in the country, particularly the metros, in the aftermath of Army's surgical strikes in PoK, the home ministry on Friday issued an alert seeking stepped up vigil at strategic installations, industrial complexes, crowded places, airports, historical monuments and government buildings across the country.

The alert identified Delhi, along with Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra and Gujarat as possible targets.

Calling the Uri attack as "despicable", a top global Jewish body has offered full support to India in its fight against terrorism. "During this difficult time, we would like to convey our deepest condolences to the families of all the victims of this despicable attack and express our sympathy and support to the people of Uri," B'nai B'rith International president Gary P Saltzman and its CEO Daniel S Mariaschin said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

One more soldier, who was critically injured in the Uri attack, on Friday died of his wounds, taking the toll to 19. The soldier was undergoing treatment at Army's Research and Referral Hospital here. He succumbed to his injuries, defence sources said.
