The Chicago Fire surprised fans on Wednesday after revealing that its new $750 million stadium will be called McDonald’s Park. The team’s new home, which is being built on the riverfront in Chicago’s South Loop, is expected to open in 2028 and hold around 22,000 fans. While the announcement was meant to celebrate a major partnership with McDonald’s, many soccer fans online quickly turned the news into a debate about branding in American sports. The reaction spread fast across social media. Some fans mocked the decision and said it could hurt the image of Major League Soccer. One fan wrote, “This will put the league back 20 years.” Another added, “And this is why everyone dislikes American sports.” A third fan joked, “This isn’t helping the whole ‘burger league’ thing.”At the same time, some supporters found humor in the partnership instead of criticizing it. One person posted, “The pregame McGriddles are going to hit hard.” Even with mixed reactions, the naming-rights deal is one of the biggest business partnerships connected to an MLS stadium in recent years.

Joe Mansueto and Chris Kempczinski defend Chicago Fire’s McDonald’s Park partnership

The stadium project is being privately funded by Chicago Fire owner and chairman Joe Mansueto.
The exact value of the naming-rights deal has not been shared yet, but the agreement is expected to help cover part of the huge construction costs tied to the modern venue.Speaking about the partnership, Joe Mansueto said, “As we take the next step on our journey to build a world class club, our commitment to Chicago is at the center of everything we do.“That’s why McDonald’s is the perfect partner - an iconic global brand with deep Chicago roots and shared values in supporting our community. McDonald’s Park will be the stadium that Chicago deserves.”The deal goes beyond just the stadium name. Reports confirmed there will also be a permanent McDonald’s restaurant inside the venue. The fast food company will additionally support the club’s “P.L.A.Y.S. Program,” which is a soccer-based education project running in around 70 public schools across Chicago.Chris Kempczinski also spoke about the partnership and said, “Together, we are creating more than a stadium. We are building a place that serves up joy, brings together community, delivers impact, and is designed to serve generations to come.”Chicago Fire’s stadium project is part of a bigger growth period happening across MLS. Inter Miami CF recently opened its new “Nu Stadium,” while New York City FC is preparing to open the $780 million Etihad Park in Queens in 2027. FC Dallas is also investing heavily into upgrades for Toyota Stadium.
