JAIPUR: Rajasthan cricket's milestone man touched another landmark on Tuesday.
Pankaj Singh, the medium-pace workhorse grabbed his 400th first-class wicket in the ongoing
Ranji Trophy match against Delhi in Krishnagiri town of Wayanad district in Kerala. He is only the fourth Indian medium-pacer to have achieved this feat. "Really?
That makes it a big achievement, "Pankaj said when TOI caught up with him on Tuesday evening. "Which medium-pacer has the most wickets?" he asked. When informed that former India bowler
Madan Lal had 625, Pankaj was a trifle disappointed. "That's a bit too much," he commented.
However, the second on the list does interest him. Debasis Mohanty, another former India medium-pacer, has 417. With only one league match remaining this season and Team Rajasthan not really best placed to qualify for the knockout stage, Pankaj will target that milestone in the next season. As of now, he would be happy to lead Rajasthan to a respectable position.
"The aim now is to help Rajasthan improve the standing in our group," Pankaj said. Incidentally, the ongoing match is the 100th first class game of his career. In the previous match against Karnataka, he became the highest-ever wicket-taker for Rajasthan.
Pankaj's 400th wicket was Sumit Narwal, who was clean bowled. Teammates rushed in to congratulate him as one of his dreams was fulfilled. That, incidentally, was Pankaj's 34th wicket of the Ranji season, among the highest so far. "I have been quite consistent on the domestic level," he said. "I just I get to play for India again. That is my main motivation."
