Government Formation News 2026 Live Updates: TVK chief Vijay set to meet TN guv shortly, stake claim to form govt

Government Formation News 2026 Live Updates: Following the Tamil Nadu assembly election results, 108 newly elected MLAs of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), including representatives from far-flung constituencies, were moved to a private luxury resort in Mamallapuram on Wednesday.

The decision came after a meeting with party chief Vijay. Tight security arrangements have been put in place, with a strong police presence and heightened surveillance around the resort.

More than 50 MLAs are currently accommodated at the Four Points Star hotel in Poonjeri, Mamallapuram, with additional legislators expected to arrive through the day as the party continues internal deliberations and post-poll strategy planning.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress in Tamil Nadu has unanimously decided to support TVK in forming the government, after the Vijay-led party fell 10 seats short of the majority mark in the 2026 Assembly elections, according to sources.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President K Selvaperunthagai chaired a late-night virtual meeting with party MLAs and senior leaders to discuss extending support to TVK, which secured 108 seats in the Assembly.

According to party sources, the Google Meet session involved detailed discussions on the evolving political scenario in the state and the strategic implications of aligning with TVK.

In New Delhi, Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal confirmed that Vijay had sought the party’s support in Tamil Nadu, adding that the leadership had asked the state unit to take a final call.

Earlier, on May 4, TVK registered a major breakthrough in the Assembly elections, emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member House, just 10 short of the majority mark. The party is now reaching out to smaller parties across both the DMK and AIADMK camps to secure the numbers needed to form the government.

The Congress holds five seats, while the PMK has four. The CPI, CPI(M), and VCK have two seats each, and these parties are expected to play a crucial role in extending support to the Vijay-led formation.

Congress’ backing of TVK marks a significant political shift not just in Tamil Nadu but also at the national level, where it remains allied with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the INDIA bloc. The development is likely to prompt a reassessment of alliance dynamics and strategies ahead of the 2029 general elections.
