U.S. embassy and consulates in India to remain closed on these dates; what it means for visa applications
Routine consular services at the United States Embassy and its consulates across India will remain unavailable for three consecutive days beginning Wednesday, December 24, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in India announced on their official website. The closure will extend through Friday, December 26. This will directly affect visa services, passport-related appointments and other non-emergency consular operations.
As per the order published on the official website, the temporary shutdown comes in line with a Presidential Executive Order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump, mandating the closure of executive departments and federal agencies on the days immediately preceding and following Christmas Day. So as a result, U.S. diplomatic missions overseas, including those in India, will also observe the closure during this period.
In a public statement shared by the U.S. Embassy in India, officials confirmed that all routine consular services would be suspended during the three-day window.
The order states: “By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:
Section 1. All executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, and Friday, December 26, 2025, the day before and the day following Christmas Day, respectively.
Sec. 2. The heads of executive departments and agencies may determine that certain offices and installations of their organizations, or parts thereof, must remain open and that certain employees must report for duty on December 24, 2025, or December 26, 2025, or both, for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need.”
As per the order, the federal employees will be excused from duty on these days. The directive applies across the US government’s administrative structure, including overseas diplomatic missions such as embassies and consulates.
But this temporary closure does not mean everything will be off limits. The allows flexibility for critical operations. Heads of departments and agencies have been given the authority to keep certain offices or installations operational if required for national security, defence, or other essential public needs.
For applicants and travellers in India, this means that routine embassy-related services like visa interviews, passport renewals, document verification, and notarial services will not be conducted between December 24 and December 26.
US citizens in India seeking emergency assistance, such as help related to medical emergencies, arrests, or urgent travel issues, may still be able to access limited services. Typically, embassies and consulates maintain emergency contact mechanisms even during official closures. Keep a track of it from the official website.
The announcement has come at a time when people are either busy planning for holiday travel, and international travel volumes are generally high, particularly around Christmas and New Year.
Consular services are expected to resume on Monday, December 29, 2025, as December 27 and 28 fall on a weekend. This means, there will be a five-day gap in routine operations, which could result in longer processing timelines.
U.S. citizens residing in or travelling through India are encouraged to plan travel and documentation needs carefully, particularly if they require consular assistance shortly before or after the holiday period.
With services set to resume after December 26, officials expect normal operations to restart quickly, though some backlog is possible.

A standard federal practice
Extended closures around major U.S. holidays are not unprecedented. Similar executive orders have been issued by past administrations to provide federal employees with extended breaks around Christmas or other significant holidays. For overseas missions, these closures are typically announced in advance to allow the public to adjust their plans. What applicants and U.S. citizens should do
The embassy has recommended that individuals monitor official websites and social media channels for updates related to consular operations. Those with urgent needs are advised to use emergency contact numbers provided by the embassy or consulates.
