When we talk about the flu in kids, most parents think of a few days of fever, cough, and missed school. But sometimes, the flu can turn severe, and that’s when it needs serious attention.A severe form of flu in children isn’t just about a high temperature. It can hit fast and hard, especially in infants, toddlers, and kids with weak immunity, asthma, heart problems, or other chronic conditions. The virus can affect not just the lungs but the entire body.

Symptoms of flu in kids

One of the biggest red flags is persistently high fever, especially if it doesn’t come down with medication or keeps returning after seeming to improve.
Add to that extreme tiredness, difficulty breathing, fast or laboured breaths, or a wheezing sound, and it’s time to act. Some children may refuse food and fluids completely, leading to dehydration, which can worsen the situation quickly. In severe cases, flu can cause pneumonia, chest infections, or even inflammation of the brain (encephalitis). Symptoms like confusion, unusual sleepiness, seizures, bluish lips, or severe chest pain should never be ignored. Another worrying sign is when a child seems better for a day or two and then suddenly gets much worse, this could indicate a secondary bacterial infection.Flu symptoms can look like a regular cold at first. That’s why parents should trust their instincts. If something feels “off” or your child just doesn’t seem like themselves, it’s better to consult a doctor soon.
