Kumar R of TVK secured a commanding victory, polling 80,430 votes and defeating AIADMK’s Ashok MK by a margin of 33,305 votes. Congress candidate Aassan Maulaana JMH finished close behind in third with 45,928 votes, as the contest ended in a clear win for TVK.The Velachery seat witnessed the DMK-led alliance re-nominating the incumbent J. M. H. Aassan Maulaana of the Indian National Congress, who sought a second term after a narrow victory in the previous cycle. He faced M. K. Ashok, a veteran AIADMK leader and former MLA who aimed to reclaim the seat he lost by a slim margin in 2021. The new formidable entrant was M Mohamed Yaseen, representing the TVK, who targeted the constituency's vast population of IT professionals and young urban voters. The 2021 election saw J. M. H. Aassan Maulaana (INC) secure a hard-fought victory with 68,493 votes (38.8% vote share), defeating M. K. Ashok (AIADMK), who polled 64,141 votes. The victory margin was a close 4,352 votes. In the 2016 election, the seat was won by Vagai Chandrasekhar (DMK), the popular actor-politician who polled 70,139 votes, defeating the AIADMK’s C. Munusamy by 8,872 votes. The voter turnout this year was 83.92%, which is a major jump in comparison to 56.2% of the 2021 elections.
Velachery (Constituency No. 26), located in South Chennai, is a premier residential and IT hub that has seen rapid transformation over the last two decades. Landmarks like the Vijayanagar Junction, Velachery Lake, and its proximity to the IT Corridor (OMR) and the Phoenix MarketCity mall define its identity. A socially diverse and highly educated electorate, including a significant number of migrant professionals and middle-class families, makes it a critical barometer for urban governance and infrastructure-led political sentiment.The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
