TIRUR: IUML candidate Kurukkoli Moideen wins the seat in Tirur, Kerala, securing 1,06,108 votes to retain the constituency he currently holds. The 66-year-old candidate defeated CPM's V.Abdurahiman, who polled 81,971 votes, by a margin of 24,137 votes. Moideen, who has one criminal case on record, continues his tenure as the MLA for Tirur, bringing another term to his name in this Kerala constituency.Rooted in Kerala's Malappuram district, the Tirur Assembly constituency occupies the 45th place among the state's 140 legislative seats, forming a cornerstone of the Ponnani Lok Sabha region. This general seat energizes over 200,000 voters from a vibrant Muslim-majority landscape, sustaining turnouts around 73 per cent, and blankets Tirur town with its surrounding grama panchayats along north Kerala's coastal belt. It cements IUML's long-standing authority in the UDF fold, navigating LDF pressures in this dynamic electoral hub. In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, IUML's Kurukkoli Moideen soared with 82,314 votes at 48.21 per cent, fending off CPI(M)'s Gafoor P Lillees's 75,100 votes (43.98 per cent) by 7,214 votes amid robust participation. The 2016 verdict upheld IUML's C. Mammutty with 73,432 votes (46.85 per cent), besting NSC's Gafoor P Lillis's 66,371 votes (42.34 per cent) by 7,061 votes from nearly 190,000 voters, epitomizing the party's grip through tight contests.
On the cusp of 2026, Tirur's saga of IUML victories spanning decades, fueled by community bonds and focuses on trade and education, faces LDF resurgence and minor NDA bids. Local tides around livelihoods and infrastructure will sharpen the fray, anchoring this UDF pillar in Kerala's north political pulse.
