Anand N of TVK won the seat with 51,632 votes, defeating AIADMK’s Sathiyanarayanan B by a margin of 13,027 votes. DMK’s Raja Anbazhagan finished a close third with 37,017 votes, as the contest saw a competitive three-way fight with TVK emerging on top.
Thiyagarayanagar constituency was turned into a battleground as the DMK fielded Raja Anbazhagan, the son of the late party veteran J. Anbazhagan, replacing the incumbent J. Karunanithi. He faced B. Sathyanarayanan, a veteran AIADMK leader and former MLA who narrowly lost this seat in the previous cycle. The new formidable entrant was N. Anand, representing the TVK, whose candidacy aimed to mobilise the constituency's significant trade and youth vote.
The 2021 election saw J Karunanithi (DMK) secure a nail-biting victory with 56,035 votes (41.05% total vote share), defeating B. Sathiyanaarayanan (AIADMK), who polled 55,898 votes. The victory margin was a razor-thin 137 votes, the smallest in the state. In the 2016 election, the seat was won by B Sathyanarayanan (AIADMK), who polled 53,207 votes, defeating the DMK’s Dr N S Kanimozhi by 3,155 votes.
The voter turnout this year was 83.55%, which is a major jump in comparison to 55.71% of the 2021 elections.
Thiyagarayanagar (Constituency No. 24), located in the heart of South Chennai, is the city's premier commercial and shopping hub. Landmarks like Pondy Bazaar, the Panagal Park, and the bustling Ranganathan Street define its identity as a global retail destination. A socially diverse electorate, including a significant population of the trading community and long-settled middle-class families in areas like West Mambalam and Ashok Nagar, makes it a critical barometer for urban economic and political sentiment.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
