NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu on Monday witnessed a political shake-up as mega movie star “Thalapathy” Vijay made a cinematic entry into electoral politics, with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as a disruptive force that cut into the long-standing dominance of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its arch-rival force All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).In a debut that has jolted the state’s political arithmetic, TVK surged into triple-digit leads in early trends, positioning itself as a major new player in Tamil Nadu politics. Yet, Vijay’s new outfit fell short of the magic majority mark of 118 seats, leaving it as a strong contender but not a clear ruler.

For a state shaped for decades by towering figures like K Kamaraj, M Karunanidhi, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, TVK’s emergence is being seen as a fresh disruption to a familiar two-party ecosystem. Now, as TVK stands as a potential single-largest force without a majority, the spotlight shifts to what comes next for Vijay and his political experiment.TVK founder Vijay’s political venture was conceived as a solo project, with his father and former filmmaker Chandrasekhar reiterating that the actor-turned-politician was expected to go alone in his political journey while speaking to news agency ANI.
Chandrasekhar, who helped launch Vijay’s career as a child artist in the 1980s, said the actor had been driven for nearly three decades by a desire to contribute to Tamil Nadu’s development, a vision that has now translated into a striking electoral debut.“I am motivated. As a human, you should not only be an artist, you should have some social thinking. For last 30 years, he (Vijay) had something in his mind, that he has to do something for Tamil Nadu, slowly he has developed. Today he is going to be Chief Minister,” Chandrasekhar told ANI.He added that since the formation of his party in 2024, Vijay had shown strong confidence about his political future.“In the last two years, his confidence has been fantastic and the faith that I will come as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. I'm appreciating that attitude. As a leader, his boldness is that I will stand on my own legs with no alliance. I think it's a historical success, a historical victory for Vijay,” he said.

The Congress question

With numbers falling short of the halfway mark, attention has turned to post-poll equations and whether TVK could seek support from the Congress to form a government. At the same time, Congress may also weigh its options within the broader alignment dynamics in the state, including the possibility of engaging with the DMK depending on final numbers, adding further uncertainty to the formation of government. However, Congress itself remains constrained by its national positioning and alliance commitments, making any decisive tilt a politically delicate move.

AIADMK factor

The electoral landscape also reflects continued churn within the AIADMK, which has struggled to regain its pre-2016 footing after the death of Amma. Despite that, the party still remains a key post-poll player in a fragmented mandate scenario.

Vijay’s final test

TVK’s debut has clearly rewritten the early narrative of the Tamil Nadu contest, breaking the expected binary between DMK and AIADMK.The decisive question now is whether Vijay stays committed to a solo political path or pivots towards alliances to translate his surge into governance power, a move that will define both his political credibility and TVK’s future trajectory.
