Thiruporur election results 2026: TVK’s B. Vijayaraj wins Thiruporur by 39,351 votes, defeats VCK and PMK

In Thiruporur, B. Vijayaraj of TVK secured a decisive victory, polling 1,10,095 votes. He defeated VCK’s R. Panneerdoss by a margin of 39,351 votes. PMK’s K. Balu finished third with 67,392 votes, as the constituency delivered a clear mandate in favour of TVK.

The Thiruporur constituency witnessed a competitive multi-cornered contest as the DMK-led alliance fielded R Panneer Doss of the VCK, who sought to retain the seat for the coalition. He faced a stiff challenge from K Balu, a high-profile advocate and veteran leader from the PMK (AIADMK-led alliance). The entry of B Vijayaraj, a 32-year-old lawyer representing the TVK, and Ambeth Rajan of the NTK further intensified the race, particularly appealing to the constituency’s significant youth and professional population.

The 2021 election saw S S Balaji (VCK) secure a hard-fought victory with 93,954 votes (41.4% vote share), narrowly defeating K Arumugam (PMK), who polled 92,007 votes. The victory margin was a slim 1,947 votes. In the 2019 by-election, the seat was won by L Idhayavarman (DMK) with 1,03,248 votes, while the 2016 election was won by M Kothandapani (AIADMK), who polled 70,215 votes.

The voter turnout this year was 88.58%, which is a notable increase from the 76.28% recorded in the 2021 elections.

Thiruporur (Constituency No. 33), located in the Chengalpattu district along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), is a unique blend of ancient heritage and modern rapid urbanisation. Landmarks like the historic Thiruporur Kandaswamy Temple and the proximity to the SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri define its identity. A socially diverse electorate, comprising traditional agrarian communities and a massive influx of IT professionals and migrant workers, makes it a critical barometer for balancing traditional infrastructure needs with the demands of a modern tech-driven population.

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties.
