Thenarasu K of TVK registered a commanding victory, polling 1,47,611 votes and defeating Congress candidate K. Selvaperunthagai by a margin of 54,246 votes.
AIADMK’s K. Palani finished third with 73,182 votes, as the constituency delivered a decisive mandate in favour of TVK.
Sriperumbudur constituency saw the INC (DMK-led alliance) re-nominating the incumbent, K. Selvaperunthagai, the president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. He faced K. Palani, a veteran AIADMK leader and former MLA who sought to reclaim the seat. The new formidable entrant was Thennarasu K., representing the TVK, a 36-year-old businessman who emerged as a significant challenger by targeting the industrial workforce.
The 2021 election saw K. Selvaperunthagai (INC) secure a victory with 1,15,353 votes (43.65% vote share), defeating K. Palani (AIADMK), who polled 1,04,474 votes. The victory margin was 10,879 votes. In the 2016 election, the seat was won by K. Palani (AIADMK), who polled 1,01,001 votes, defeating the INC's K. Selvaperunthagai by 10,716 votes.
The voter turnout this year was 86.09%, which is a major jump in comparison to 74% of the 2021 elections.
Sriperumbudur (Constituency No. 29), located in the Kancheepuram district, is a premier industrial and historical segment reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Castes. Landmarks like the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial and the massive SIPCOT industrial estates—home to global giants like Hyundai and Samsung—define its identity. A socially diverse electorate, dominated by a large industrial workforce and traditional agricultural communities, makes it a critical barometer for labour and economic sentiment.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were held in a single phase on April 23, recording a high voter turnout of 85.15%, with results declared on May 4. The polls witnessed an intense three-way contest that challenged the state’s traditional bipolar political structure. The electoral battle was primarily between the DMK-led alliance, including the INC and other parties, headed by MK Stalin and the AIADMK-led alliance, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, along with the BJP and other parties. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking actor Vijay’s political debut as a third force across all 234 constituencies.
