Rudranil Ghosh of the Bharatiya Janata Party defeated Dr Rana Chatterjee of the All India Trinamool Congress in Shibpur, winning by a margin of 16,058 votes after all all 20 rounds of counting.
Shibpur is an assembly seat numbered 172 in Howrah district, West Bengal. It forms part of the Howrah Lok Sabha constituency and covers Shibpur locality within Howrah Municipal Corporation wards, a historic urban neighborhood known for the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology.
This fully urban constituency has dense residential and educational areas opposite Kolkata across the Hooghly River, with around 200,000 electors. It features low SC/ST populations and voter turnout around 70-75per cent.
In the 2021 election, TMC's Manoj Tiwary won with 92,372 votes (50.69per cent share), defeating BJP's Rathin Chakrabarty (59,769 votes, 32.80per cent) by 32,603 votes. AIFB's Jagannath Bhattacharyya got 24,970 votes (13.70per cent), NOTA 1,912 votes (1.05per cent), and others under 1per cent each.
