NEW DELHI: The Sadiya constituency in Assam witnessed a direct contest between BJP leader Bolin Chetia and AJP's Jagadish Bhuyan, with both candidates seeking to secure a crucial mandate. Chetia bested Bhuyan by 41,749 vote margin after securing a total of 97,087 votes.
Polling for all 126 constituencies took place on April 9, and the state recorded an impressive voter turnout of over 85 per cent.
This high level of participation was not limited to rural areas alone, as urban centres also reported strong voter engagement, reflecting widespread enthusiasm among the electorate.
Sadiya is an assembly constituency in Assam's Tinsukia district, part of the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha area, located at the eastern tip near Arunachal Pradesh, with a mix of tribal, tea, and border communities.
Bolin Chetia of the BJP is the current MLA, having won in 2021, 2016, and earlier as the INC before switching parties.
In 2021, he secured 64,855 votes (45per cent share), defeating INC's Lakhin Chandra Chetia (42,771 votes, 30per cent) by 22,084 votes. Border security tensions with Arunachal Pradesh over disputed areas spark protests and blockades, affecting trade and connectivity.
Flooding from the Lohit and Sadiya rivers erodes farmlands, while infrastructure gaps like roads and embankments lag in this remote zone. Tea worker welfare and youth employment beyond agriculture drive local demands
