NEW DELHI: Taranga Gogoi of the BJP emerged victorious in the election, securing a total of 87768 votes. He defeated Congress candidate Pranatee Phukan by a decisive margin of 62282 votes.
BJP's Taranga Gogoi was in contest with Congress's Pranatee Phukan for the constituency of Naharkatia in the 2026 assembly elections.
There were a total of 155898 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2026 Assembly election in Naharkatia Assembly constituency, of whom 76114 were male, 79783 female and 1 belonged to the third gender.
Assam voted across all 126 seats on April 9, recording a turnout of over 85%, one of the highest in recent years.
Naharkatia is an assembly constituency in Assam's Dibrugarh district, part of the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha area, recognized as an oilfield hub with tea gardens and rural character. Taranga Gogoi of BJP serves as the current MLA, elected in the 2021 Assam assembly elections. He won with 46,051 to 47,268 votes (42-47per cent share), defeating INC's Pranatee Phukan (42,520 votes, 43per cent) by a margin of 3,531 to 14,976 votes.
Cattle theft and smuggling have escalated tensions, with 150+ animals missing recently, leading to discoveries of carcasses and demands for stricter policing. Infrastructure improvements like the Burhi Dihing bridge (to cut Dibrugarh travel by 40 km) and school provincialization are highlighted, but voters seek sustained development amid oil and tea economies. Flooding and balancing industrial growth with local welfare remain persistent concerns.
