NEW DELHI: Mohibur Rohman (Bappy) of the Indian National Congress has won the Mankachar Assembly constituency in Assam with a margin of 53,146 votes. He secured 1,69,036 votes, defeating Zabed Islam of the Asom Gana Parishad, who polled 1,15,890 votes. AIUDF candidate Abdul Salam Shah finished third with 9,974 votes, while other candidates, including independents and SUCI(C), trailed significantly.
Mankachar, located in South Salmara-Mankachar district and part of the Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency, is a predominantly rural seat along the Brahmaputra river plains. The result reinforces the Congress’s continued dominance in the constituency, following its strong performance in 2021 when the party secured a landslide victory with a massive vote share.
The 2026 Assam Assembly elections recorded a historic turnout of 85.9 percent, the highest since 1951. Women voters played a significant role, with participation at 86.5 percent compared to 85.3 percent among men, marking the highest-ever female turnout in the state.
