This general seat draws over 200,000 voters from a predominantly Muslim demographic, with turnouts around 74-75 per cent, covering Kottakkal town and adjacent grama panchayats in north Kerala. It serves as a solid IUML stronghold within the UDF alliance, reflecting the party's deep organizational roots amid LDF and NCP challenges.
In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, IUML's Prof. K.K. Abid Hussain Thangal won with 81,700 votes at 51.08 per cent, defeating NCP's Na. Muhammed Kutty's 65,112 votes (40.71 per cent) by 16,588 votes from nearly 200,000 electors.
