India Pakistan Ceasefire Live highlights: 'Pak has violated ceasefire over last few hours, India giving befitting reply,' says MEA

India Pakistan Tensions Live Updates: India and Pakistan are currently facing one of the most intense periods of border tensions in recent years, triggered by the launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, 2025. Early on Friday morning, loud explosions reverberated through Jammu city, causing a total blackout just hours after India foiled Pakistan’s attempt to target military installations along the border. Reports indicated the presence of loitering munitions in the skies.

Similarly, the border town of Jaisalmer experienced loud explosions during the night, while blackouts were imposed across western Rajasthan's districts bordering Pakistan, plunging the area into darkness. A senior official also confirmed that a series of blasts persisted for nearly an hour.

Multiple districts of Punjab, Chandigarh, and parts of Haryana, including Panchkula, Ambala, and Sirsa also faced these blackouts. These measures were taken amid rising military tensions following India's Operation Sindoor and the increasing threat of airstrikes.

These tensions escalated after Operation Sindoor was carried out in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali tourist. The strike targeted nine key terrorist infrastructures linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), spanning locations in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

According to official sources, the operation commenced at 1:05 am and concluded by 1:30 am, with some follow-up strikes taking place at 1:44 am. The attack was aimed at neutralising the operational bases of major terror outfits while consciously avoiding Pakistani military installations. This approach, military officials said, was to prevent an all-out escalation while still delivering a strong message.

Among the targets were JeM’s headquarters in Bahawalpur and LeT’s base in Muridke. Other sites hit included terrorist locations in Sialkot and Tehra Kalan in Pakistan, and Muzaffarabad and Kotli in PoK. The military described the strikes as "focused, measured, and non-escalatory," aimed solely at terrorist facilities. The operation was briefed to the public by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh during a press conference in New Delhi.

In response, Pakistan’s prime minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the strikes, calling them an “act of war” and vowing that a firm response was already underway. He said that the entire Pakistani nation stood in solidarity with its armed forces and was prepared for any further developments. Sharif also warned of Pakistan’s right to retaliate, heightening concerns of broader military engagement in the region.

The government, meanwhile, said that the action was necessary and justified. Earlier during a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, praised the armed forces for their precision and bravery. He expressed pride in the success of the operation and urged continued vigilance against future threats.

The conflict attracted the attention of many international leaders. US President Donald Trump commented on the situation, expressing concern over the rising tensions. "It’s so terrible," he said, adding that he had good relations with both India and Pakistan and hoped to see the two nations resolve the conflict. "Hopefully they can stop now, as they have gone tit-for-tat," Trump said, offering to assist in de-escalation efforts if needed.

India Pakistan Tension Live: India should take the first step to de-escalate, says Mehbooba Mufti
As tensions between India and Pakistan continued to escalate, People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday called on India to take the first step toward de-escalation and embrace its leadership role in the subcontinent. She stressed that India’s true strength lies in its soft power and commitment to peace, not in nuclear capability.

"Even though initially US Vice President Venice stated that America wouldn't intervene beyond a certain point in the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan – now in light of the worrying intensity of the situation, US Secretary of State Marc Rubeio has reached out to the Pakistani Army Chief, urging de-escalation," Mehbooba Mufti said in a post on X.

She cautioned against overreliance on external support, saying, "India as the world's largest democracy and now as an emerging power/ the most populous nation—with a rapidly growing economy ranked third globally must not rely on inconsistent international support."

"Instead, India should embrace its leadership role in the subcontinent and take the first step to de-escalate. The world is watching us. This is the moment for India to stand tall and demonstrate that its true strength lies in its soft power and commitment to peace, not in nukes," she added.

Indian Army air defence neutralises Pakistani Kamikaze drones over Amritsar
In the early hours of today, at approximately 0500 hrs, Pakistani forces launched multiple Byker YIHA III kamikaze drones across the International Border towards Amritsar, Punjab, in a blatant attempt to strike densely populated residential areas. Thanks to the vigilance and rapid response of the Indian Army’s Air Defence (AAD) network, the hostile drones were detected, tracked and engaged within seconds of breaching Indian airspace.

Using quick-reaction air-defence guns positioned in depth along the border belt, AAD gunners brought down the drones in mid-air, ensuring that no debris fell on civilian property and that no casualties were sustained. Initial analysis indicates that the drones carried high-explosive payloads intended to inflict maximum damage on innocent civilians—a fresh low in Pakistan’s ongoing escalation.

The prompt neutralisation of this threat underscores the effectiveness of India’s layered air-defence grid, which integrates ground-based radars, electro-optical sensors and automated command-and-control systems.

100 More Updates
Early Friday morning, panic spread in Jammu after a total blackout was enforced following air-raid sirens and loud explosions near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch and Rajouri. Around the same time, the Border Security Force (BSF) stopped a major infiltration attempt in Samba district. The BSF said the incident happened at 11 PM on May 8 and was handled by alert troops.

On Friday, the Indian Army successfully shot down over 50 swarm drones during several Pakistani attempts to breach the Line of Control (LoC) and international border on Thursday night, military sources said.

In a large-scale counter-drone operation, air defence units used advanced systems such as L-70 guns, Zu-23mm guns, Schilka systems, and specialised anti-drone equipment across key sectors, including Udhampur, Samba, Jammu, Akhnoor, Nagrota, and Pathankot.

Unverified reports also suggested that air defence systems may have shot down a Pakistani air force jet over Punjab’s Pathankot sector. Meanwhile, in the Naushera sector, Army anti-drone systems destroyed two Pakistani UAVs during a fierce exchange of artillery fire.

The Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) has confirmed that military installations in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur were targeted with a mix of drones and missiles. However, they were successfully intercepted using a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic measures, with no casualties reported.

The Union home minister Amit Shah also convened a high-level emergency meeting with the heads of all border guarding forces and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to assess preparedness and security across borders and airports.

On the global front, US Vice President JD Vance, who was in India during the Pahalgam attack, issued a statement saying the US will not intervene as this is “a regional conflict”. Vance also highlighted that while Washington is concerned about escalating tensions between two nuclear powers, it will only encourage peaceful dialogue without taking sides.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar has also been actively engaged in diplomacy, speaking to global leaders including Italy’s Foreign Minister and the European Commission Vice-President. He reaffirmed that India’s response has been "targeted, proportional, and focused on terror infrastructure."

India also firmly denied Pakistan’s claim of the Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project in PoK being targeted during the May 7 strikes. The government further warned Pak of serious consequences if Pak uses this “blatant lie” as an excuse to attack any Indian infrastructure. Foreign secretary Vikram Misri said that it was Pakistan that triggered the current tensions with the Pahalgam terror attack, and it is now up to Pakistan to choose de-escalation. Misri also said that Pak had resorted to using a disinformation war against India with its claims.

Pakistan, meanwhile, has reportedly retaliated with another wave of drone and missile attacks late Thursday night, targeting regions such as Satwari, RS Pura, and Arnia. All eight missiles were intercepted, and no casualties have been reported.

Officials have also confirmed that debris from Pakistani drones and missiles was recovered at several locations, serving as concrete evidence of the assault.
