NEW DELHI: In Gosaba, BJP’s Bikarna Naskar secured a clear victory, polling 1,08,492 votes and defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Subrata Mondal by a margin of 16,100 votes. Naskar maintained a steady lead through the counting process, reflecting solid support in the constituency. Mondal garnered 92,392 votes but finished second in the contest.
Gosaba is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a Scheduled Caste category seat and is located in the South 24 Parganas district. The constituency is part of the Jaynagar parliamentary constituency, which consists of seven assembly segments.
In the 2021 assembly election, Jayanta Naskar from the
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat. He had also won the constituency in the 2011 and 2016 assembly elections, representing AITC.
Naskar passed away in June that year, resulting in the seat falling vacant. The by-election was again won by the Trinamool; its candidate Subrata Mondal defeated his nearest challenger, Palash Rana of the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 143,051 votes.
The 2021 assembly election saw the AITC secure 54% of the vote share, while BJP's Barun Pramanik received 41.89% of the votes. Trinamool's vote share rose to 87.19% in the bypoll, while the BJP's fell to 9.95%.
