NEW DELHI: Pabitra Rabha of the Bharatiya Janata Party has won the Goalpara West Assembly constituency in Assam, securing 92,216 votes and defeating Indian National Congress candidate Markline Marak by a margin of 39,917 votes. Independent candidate Dhanjeep Prasad Rabha finished a distant third with 961 votes, while others, including candidates from Voters Party International and SUCI(C), trailed significantly.
The result marks a major shift in Goalpara West, a constituency that had been dominated by the Congress in recent elections. In 2021, Congress candidate Abdur Rashid Mandal had won the seat with 85,752 votes, defeating AGP by over 46,000 votes.
The party had also retained the seat in 2016, continuing its stronghold in the region.
With this victory, the BJP has broken the Congress’s hold over Goalpara West, signalling a significant political realignment in the constituency. The outcome reflects changing voter preferences in the Brahmaputra river belt, where the contest has historically seen close battles between Congress, AIUDF and regional parties before the BJP’s latest breakthrough.
