NEW DELHI: Even as the BJP dominated the broader electoral landscape, the Diamond Harbour seat was clinched by the Trinamool Congress, with Panna Lal Halder securing 1,19,320 votes. He defeated BJP candidate Dipak Kumar Halder by a margin of 31,266 votes after maintaining a commanding lead through the counting process. Dipak Kumar Halder polled 88,054 votes but finished well behind in second place.
Diamond Harbour is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a General category seat and is located in the South 24 Parganas district. The constituency is part of the namesake Diamond Harbour parliamentary constituency, which is represented in the Lok Sabha by
Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of three-time chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the no. 2 in her
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).
In the 2021 assembly election, AITC's Pannalal Halder won the Diamond Harbour assembly seat defeating Dipak Kumar Halder who had switched to the
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the polls. Dipak Kumar Halder had won in the 2011 and 2016 assembly elections on a Trinamool ticket, making it three consecutive terms for the party.
In the recent assembly polls, Trinamool entrusted Pannalal Halder with retaining Diamond Harbour. BJP again fielded Dipak Kumar Halder.
In 2021, AITC secured 43.69% of the vote share, while the BJP received 40.62% of the votes.
