Over 1.52 lakh new cases were reported in India in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said on Sunday. Five states - Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala cumulatively account for 70.82 per cent of India's active Covid-19 cases. Stay here for all live updates

Chhattisgarh reported 14,098 new infections, up from 11,447 on the previous day, while deaths climbed to 123 from 91 on Friday.

Maharashtra’s share in the daily national case count has dropped from the peak of 65% on March 18 to 36.4% on April 9. Maharashtra on Saturday reported 55,411 fresh cases and 309 deaths.

Deaths also climbed to 839 on Saturday, the highest daily toll since October 16 last year. Although deaths have been rising steadily during the second wave, the toll continues to be low compared with the case fatality rates seen during the peak of the first wave in the country.

There were 1,52,545 new cases recorded across the country, up more than 5% from Friday's count of 1.45 lakh. The 1.5 lakh count was crossed just six days after daily cases went past the 1-lakh mark, a 50% rise in less than a week.

12 cities in Madhya Pradesh go into lockdown
A dozen cities in Madhya Pradesh — including commercial capital Indore — are going into lockdown as the state battles an unprecedented Covid crisis. All urban centres were under weekend lockdown on Saturday, when it was extended till April 19 in Indore, MP’s worst hit district. Lockdown in some other districts has been extended till April 22, but it will kick in on the evening of April 12. Indore will be under lockdown till 6am on April 19. Officials said the shutdown will be in force in Rau, Mhow, Shajapur urban areas and districts like Ujjain, Barwani, Rajgarh and Vidisha. Balaghat, Narsinghpur and Seoni districts will go into lockdown from April 12 to April 22, along with Jabalpur city.
