A record 3,780 fresh Covid-19 fatalities were registered in a single day in India taking the death toll to 2,26,188, while 3,82,315 new coronavirus infections were recorded, according to the Union health ministry data updated on Wednesday. MHA asks states, UTs to conduct fire safety review of hospitals, nursing homes

The home ministry on Wednesday asked states and union territories to carry out a detailed fire safety review of hospitals and nursing homes to prevent fire incidents, an official spokesperson said. Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla has written to state chief secretaries and UT administrators, asking them to ensure fire safety measures, particularly in view of the summer season.

States/UTs requested to issue directions to the concerned officials at various levels, that heath facilities should be visited by field level officials, to examine internal wirings and availability of functional safety equipment as per fire safety norms and take remedial actions.
MHA has highlighted that a large number of Covid-19 cases are under treatment in dedicated facilities across the country. In most of the cases, oxygen supported beds, ICU beds, and ventilators are critical interventions, and it is important to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

MHA draws attention of states/UTs to the occurrence of fire incidents, caused by short-circuiting, in hospitals and nursing homes in the recent past. It says care should be taken to put in place a plan of action, to ensure that no such fire incident occurs in any health facility.
States/UTs requested to conduct a detailed review with officials from the health, power and fire departments, and prepare a detailed plan of action to ensure that fire safety measures are in place in all hospitals and health facilities.

India accounted for one in four Covid-19 deaths globally last week: WHO

India accounted for nearly half of the Covid-19 cases reported worldwide last week and one in four of deaths, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday. "India accounts for over 90% of both cases and deaths in the region, as well as 46% of global cases and 25% of global deaths reported in the past week," the Geneva-based agency said in its weekly epidemiological report.
