The announcement came shortly after the New England Journal of Medicine published results from the first stage of Moderna's vaccine trial, which showed the first 45 participants all developed antibodies to the virus. India is among many other countries like Russia, China, US and UK fast-tracking processes to develop a vaccine for Covid-19, the ICMR director general Balram Bhargava said, underlining the important role of India as the supplier of 60% vaccines administered across the world. Bhargava said all the countries developing a vaccine are in touch with Indian companies because irrespective of where a vaccine is developed, India will play a key role in manufacturing it for the masses.

Hebrew University researcher claims existing drug can 'downgrade' Covid threat to common cold level, reports PTI.
Professor Yaakov Nahmias, director of HU's Grass Center for Bioengineering, in a joint research with Benjamin tenOever at New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center, found that the novel coronavirus is so vicious because it causes lipids to be deposited in the lungs and that fenofibrate can undo the damage. "If our findings are borne out by clinical studies, this course of treatment could potentially downgrade Covid-19's severity into nothing worse than a common cold," Nahmias was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the HU.

Bihar goes for 16-day lockdown
There will be a 16-day complete lockdown starting July 16 in Bihar due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, with the total number crossing 18,000. Lockdown 6.0 will cover all urban areas and rural block headquarters. There will be relaxations for agricultural activities.

Covid-19: Recoveries 1.8 times of active cases now

As more and more Covid patients get better, the Centre said on Tuesday that the gap between active and recovered cases of Covid-19 is increasing progressively across the country. It said most of the infection spread is limited to a few states, indicating effective containment measures have been implemented to control the pandemic. Recoveries now account for 1.8 times the active cases, meaning people who are getting discharged from hospitals are much more than the new cases getting admitted.

Provision for plasma air purification, hands-free amenities such as foot-operated soap dispensers and handrails coated with anti-microbial copper are among the features planned to be introduced in coaches by the Indian Railways as it looks to make travel safer post Covid.
