NEW DELHI: Even as the BJP maintained an overall edge in the state, this constituency was won by the Trinamool Congress, with Md Baharul Islam securing a resounding victory by polling 1,48,687 votes. He defeated All India Secular Front candidate Arabul Islam by a massive margin of 91,954 votes, dominating the contest from the outset. Arabul Islam managed 56,733 votes but was left far behind in second place.
Canning Purba is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a general category seat and is located in the South 24 Parganas district. The constituency is part of the Jaynagar parliamentary constituency, which includes seven assembly segments.
In the 2021 assembly election, Saokat Molla from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat. He had also won the constituency in the 2016 assembly election, representing AITC.
Before that, Abdur Razzak Molla from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, held the constituency from 1977-2011, a period during which the Left front, of which the party remains a constituent, was in power in the state.
In the 2021 assembly election, the AITC secured 52.55% of the vote share, while Indian Secular Front (ISF) candidate Gaji Shahabuddin Siraji was the runner-up with 29.77% of the votes.
