NEW DELHI: Even as the BJP led the overall tally across the state, this seat went to the Trinamool Congress, with Paresh Ram Das securing 1,20,548 votes. He defeated BJP candidate Prasanta Bayen by a margin of 40,665 votes, maintaining a comfortable lead throughout the counting process. Bayen polled 79,883 votes but finished well behind in second place.
Canning Paschim is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a reserved seat for Scheduled Castes (SC). The constituency is located in the South 24 Parganas district and forms part of the Jaynagar (SC) parliamentary constituency, which includes seven Assembly segments.
In the 2021 assembly election, Paresh Ram Das from the
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat. The AITC also held the constituency in earlier elections.
In 2016, Shyamal Mondal from AITC was elected as the MLA, and he had also won the seat in the 2011 assembly election.
In terms of vote share in the 2021 assembly election, the AITC secured 50.87% of the votes, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which fielded Arnab Roy, received 34.73% votes.
The constituency has remained under AITC representation for the past three assembly elections.
