NEW DELHI: Wazed Ali Choudhury of the Indian National Congress won the Birsing Jarua assembly seat in Assam, defeating Ali Akbar Miah of the All India United Democratic Front by a margin of 35,885 votes. Choudhury secured 1,13,901 votes, while Miah polled 78,016.
Independent candidate Reza Amin finished third with 68,556 votes, emerging as a strong non-party contender. Madhabi Das of the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 8,083 votes, while candidates from smaller parties and independents received marginal support.
Birsing Jarua, located in Assam’s Dhubri district, has traditionally witnessed strong voter participation and competitive electoral contests. In 2021, AIUDF’s Aminul Islam had won the seat by over 56,000 votes, underlining the party’s earlier dominance in the region.
The 2026 result marks a shift in voter preference, with Congress reclaiming ground in a constituency that had previously leaned towards the AIUDF. The presence of a strong independent candidate also added a new dimension to the contest.
Assam’s 2026 assembly elections recorded a historic turnout of 85.9%, the highest since 1951. Women voters registered a turnout of 86.5%, higher than men at 85.3%, reflecting strong electoral participation across the state.
