In Bhowanipur-Sorbhog, Ranjeet Kumar Dass of BJP secured a commanding victory, polling 1,13,069 votes. He defeated CPI(M)’s Manoranjan Talukdar by a margin of 39,152 votes. AIUDF’s Farhad Ali finished a distant third with 3,253 votes, as the constituency delivered a decisive mandate in favour of BJP.Bhawanipur-Sorbhog is an assembly constituency one of the 126 constituencies in Assam. It is in Barpeta district, part of the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency. It covers a rural area of about 378 square kilometers, including mouzas like Bhabanipur, Bijni, and Hastinapur in Bajali district.In 2026, assembly elections BJP fielded Ranjeet Kumar Dass against Congress’s Manoranjan Talukdar (CPM).The constituency has around 189,000 residents as per 2011 census estimates, with 100per cent rural population, 6.56per cent Scheduled Castes, and 19.95per cent Scheduled Tribes. It had 149,940 electors and 204 polling stations as of 2022 voter lists, with high turnout like 84.47per cent in the 2021 assembly polls.In the 2021 by-election, BJP's Phanidhar Talukdar won with 64,200 votes (56.41per cent share) and a margin of 25,641 over INC's Sailendra Nath Das (38,559 votes). The main 2021 election saw AIUDF's Foni Talukdar take the seat with 55,975 votes over AGP's Ranjit Deka.The estimated voter turnout in Bhawanipur-Sorbhog Assembly constituency of Assam was 81.99% till 7pm in comparison to 2021 which was 81.8%. Assam’s 2026 assembly elections recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.9% by evening on April 9, the highest since the state’s first polls in 1951, with large numbers of people turning out to vote despite rain. This marks the highest turnout in the state’s history, surpassing the previous highs of 84.67% in 2016 and 82.04% in 2021.According to ED data, women recorded a voter turnout of 86.5% in the 2026 assembly elections, over a percentage point higher than men at 85.3%. This also marks the highest-ever female participation in the state.
