NEW DELHI: Santanu Pramanik won Bhagabanpur assembly constituency by a margin of 20,878 votes, retaining the seat for his party, the BJP.
According to the Election Commission, Pramanik polled 130,586 votes. Trinamool's Manab Kumar Parua polled 109,708 votes.
Rabindranath Maity of the BJP was the previous MLA for Bhagabanpur assembly constituency in Purba Medinipur district.
He triumphed in the 2021 election with 121,480 votes (55% share), defeating Trinamool's Ardhendu Maity (93,931 votes) by a decisive margin of 27,549 votes at 90.64% turnout. Major issues were rural unemployment and youth out-migration persist amid limited industry, with farmers facing irrigation shortages and flood damage to paddy crops.
Poor road infrastructure hampers connectivity, while law-and-order concerns and economic stagnation fuel discontent. General seat (No. 214) spans Bhagabanpur I CD block and parts of Bhagabanpur II, under Kanthi Lok Sabha (BJP's Soumendu Adhikari won 2024). BJP captured it from AITC's long-time MLA Ardhendu Maity (2001-2016); past Left dominance. Economy: agriculture, betel farming. 2026 elections pending.
