NEW DELHI: Even as the BJP maintained a broader edge across the state, this constituency was won by the Trinamool Congress, with Nilima Mistry Bishal securing 1,27,495 votes. She defeated BJP candidate Bikash Sardar by a massive margin of 56,181 votes, staying well ahead throughout the counting process. Sardar polled 71,314 votes but finished a distant second in the contest.Basanti is one of the 294 assembly constituencies in West Bengal. It is a Scheduled Caste category seat and is located in the South 24 Parganas district. The constituency is part of the Jaynagar parliamentary constituency, which includes seven assembly segments.In the 2021 assembly election, Shyamal Mondal from the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) won the seat. Earlier, Gobinda Chandra Naskar, also from AITC, had won in 2016, while Subhas Naskar from the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) held the seat from 1982 to 2011, when he came runner-up to Gobinda Naskar.In the 2021 assembly election, AITC secured 52.11% of the vote share, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which fielded Ramesh Majhi, received 28.43% of the votes.
