All India NRCongress’s C Aiyappan won from Ariankuppam constituency in Puducherry , defeating Congress’s Vizayalakshmy Djeamourthy by a margin of 603 votes.
Ariankuppam, located just south of Puducherry city, is a diverse constituency that combines coastal villages, semi-rural pockets, and the historically significant Arikamedu site within a compact region. In the April 9 assembly elections, voters are choosing among three key candidates: C Aiyappan representing the AINRC (NDA), D Vijayalakshmy (Congress) from the SPA alliance, and S Kumaravelu of the TVK. The mix of traditional party strongholds and emerging political forces makes the contest closely watched.
The constituency has witnessed shifting political control over the past few elections. In 2011, AINRC’s VS Kothandaraman secured victory, followed by Congress candidate T Jayamoorthy in 2016.
The seat swung back to AINRC in 2021, when R. Baskar Datchanamourtty won with a decisive margin of 6,418 votes. Voter participation that year was strong, with over 32,000 of the 37,383 registered voters casting their ballots.
In the 2026 elections, Ariankuppam recorded an impressive voter turnout of 90.3% by 7 pm. Polling progressed steadily throughout the day, starting at 18.51% at 9 am, rising to 38.61% by 11 am, 58.41% at 1 pm, 73.62% by 3 pm, and reaching 88.03% by 5 pm, reflecting high civic engagement.
